The answer depends on how the tree fell and how much root system is still intact. In some cases, a partially uprooted tree can be reset and stabilized successfully. In most cases — especially after full root failure or trunk damage — removal is the only practical option.

When a fallen tree can potentially be saved
A tree pushed over by wind that still has a significant portion of its root ball in the ground, no trunk damage, and is a younger, smaller specimen has the best chance of recovery — if it is reset promptly. The critical window is narrow. A tree on its side for more than a few days begins losing the ability to re-establish its root system. Resetting involves carefully returning it to upright, tamping soil back around the root ball, and staking it with proper support while roots re-anchor over the next growing season.
This is only practical for trees under about 15 feet tall. Large trees, even partially uprooted ones, are nearly impossible to reset effectively — and attempting it without proper equipment creates additional hazards.


When a fallen tree cannot be saved
If the root ball has fully pulled free from the ground, the tree is not coming back. Most feeder roots — the fine ones responsible for water and nutrient absorption — have been torn and will not survive re-anchoring. Even if stood back up, the tree will likely decline over the next growing season and eventually die, creating a secondary hazard that is now harder to predict.
Trees with trunk splits, major bark wounds, or significant decay exposed by the fall are also not candidates. The structural damage alone makes them hazardous even if they could otherwise survive.
The stump sprouting problem: it is not the tree coming back
Some species produce new sprouts from a cut stump or surface roots even after removal. This is not recovery — it is the root system producing new growth. In aggressive sprouters like water oak, sweet gum, and elm — all common in North Alabama yards — these sprouts can be persistent and require ongoing management. Stump grinding is the most effective solution, removing the material that drives regrowth.
