Preparation checklist — do these before the crew arrives

The 811 call — do not skip this
If your removal includes stump grinding, call 811 (Dig Safe Alabama) at least three business days before the job. 811 is a free service that dispatches utility locators to your property and marks buried lines — gas, electric, water, sewer, and fiber — before any ground disturbance. Stump grinders go 6–12 inches below grade, and hitting an unmarked utility line is dangerous and expensive. This step takes five minutes and prevents a serious problem.
What to expect during the job
Tree removal is noisy. Chainsaws, chippers, and equipment are in use throughout the job — plan for it. Stay well back from the work area at all times, and keep children and pets inside or at a safe distance. A falling tree or a piece of rigged-down wood can travel unpredictably even with experienced crews, so the safety perimeter around the work zone is there for your protection.
For larger trees, the process typically runs in stages: limbs come off first from top to bottom, then the trunk is sectioned from the top down, and finally ground crew handles the debris and cleanup. A typical residential removal takes 2–6 hours depending on tree size and site complexity.
What happens after the tree is down
The crew will chip brush material, cut the trunk into sections, and remove debris according to your agreement. Log wood is typically cut into rounds and left on-site or hauled away depending on your preference. If stump grinding is included, that typically happens last.
