Pre-storm season tree prep checklist
- ✓Walk every tree within fall distance of your home, vehicles, and power lines
- ✓Look for dead or dying canopy sections, hanging limbs, and co-dominant stem cracks
- ✓Identify trees with fungal growth at the base or root heaving on one side
- ✓Note any trees that have increased their lean since last year

- ✓Have problem trees evaluated before storm season — not during it
Why deadwood is your biggest pre-storm priority
Dead branches are the first things to move in high wind — and they move fast. A dead limb does not need a tornado-force event to become a projectile. A standard thunderstorm with 50-60 mph gusts can send a 200-pound dead oak limb through a roof, windshield, or fence. Removing deadwood before storm season eliminates this risk entirely at a fraction of what emergency cleanup costs after the fact.
The good news: deadwood removal is one of the less expensive tree services because it does not require the precision and planning of structural pruning. A crew can often clear significant deadwood from a large tree in a couple of hours.
Canopy reduction — when it helps and when it does not
Reducing the overall canopy volume of a tree decreases the wind load it experiences in a storm — less surface area for wind to push against means less stress on the root system and trunk. For trees with full, heavy canopies over structures, canopy thinning before storm season is a meaningful risk reduction step.
That said, canopy reduction is not a solution for a tree with structural problems. A tree with root failure, advanced trunk decay, or major structural cracks will not be saved by trimming. For these trees, removal before storm season is the correct answer — not trimming that delays the inevitable while the tree gets more dangerous.
The problem trees to prioritize
In North Alabama, the species most likely to cause storm damage problems are:
- Water oak — short lifespan, begins structural decline in the 50s and 60s, common in older Shoals neighborhoods
- Bradford pear — notorious for catastrophic co-dominant stem splits in wind events
- Silver maple — fast-growing with brittle wood that fails readily in high wind
- Large loblolly pine — susceptible to southern pine beetle death and root rot, falls cleanly with little warning
The ideal timing for pre-storm prep in Alabama
January and February are the best months for structural pruning and problem tree removal before spring storm season. Trees are dormant, crews have better availability before the spring rush, and pricing is typically more competitive. Scheduling in December or January also ensures you are ahead of the demand spike that follows the first major storm of the season.
