Should Trees Close to the House Be Removed?

Trees close to your home are not automatically dangerous — but some are. The key is understanding the difference between a tree that poses real structural risk and one that just needs regular maintenance. Making that call correctly saves you money, preserves mature trees worth keeping, and protects your home from the ones that are genuinely hazardous.

General proximity guidelines for trees near structures

  • Under 10 ft from the houseHigh concern — most trees at this distance pose ongoing risk from roots, limbs, and storm fall
  • 10–20 ftModerate concern — depends heavily on species, health, and lean direction
  • 20–30 ftLower concern for smaller trees; large trees (60 ft+) can still reach the structure in a fall
  • Over 30 ftGenerally safe for most residential trees unless structurally compromised

These are guidelines, not rules. A 15 ft healthy dogwood is very different from a 15 ft declining water oak. The tree's species, health, and lean all matter as much as the distance.

When a close tree should definitely come down

Proximity alone is not the deciding factor — condition is. A tree close to the house that also has any of these conditions is a candidate for removal:

  • Leaning toward the structure, especially if the lean has increased recently
  • Dead or significantly declining — more than 50% canopy loss
  • Root damage from construction, drought, or disease
  • Trunk cavities, co-dominant stems with cracks, or visible fungal growth at the base
  • Root system within 10 ft of the foundation — aggressive root systems from silver maple, sweet gum, or elm can undermine footings and sewer lines over time

When trimming is enough

Many trees near homes are worth keeping with proper management. Clearance pruning — removing limbs that overhang or touch the roof — eliminates the most common source of damage without sacrificing the tree. Regular trimming also reduces the wind load on the canopy, which lowers storm risk significantly for otherwise healthy trees.

A structurally sound tree with no lean toward the structure, a healthy root system, and a clear fall zone away from the house may be perfectly safe at 15 or 20 feet with proper maintenance. We will tell you which situation you have — and will not recommend removal if trimming is the right answer.

The root damage question

Beyond the falling risk, trees very close to a foundation can cause long-term structural damage through root growth. Silver maple, willow, and sweet gum have especially aggressive root systems that seek out water — including the water in your sewer lines. If you have a large tree of these species within 15 ft of your foundation or sewer line, it is worth evaluating regardless of the above-ground health.
