Not every problem tree needs to come down. But some do — and waiting too long turns a manageable removal into an emergency situation. Knowing the difference between a tree that needs trimming and one that needs full removal can save you thousands of dollars and prevent serious property damage.
Remove the tree — do not just trim it — when you see these signs
- !The tree is dead or more than 50% dead
- !The trunk has a large cavity or significant internal decay
- !The root system has heaved out of the ground on one side
- !A co-dominant stem has cracked at the union
- !The tree is leaning toward a structure and the lean is worsening
- !Bark is falling off in large sections with no regrowth underneath
- !Mushrooms or bracket fungi are growing from the base or trunk
- !The tree has been hit by lightning and shows extensive damage
Dead or more than 50% dead
A dead tree does not fall on a predictable schedule. Dead wood becomes brittle and unpredictable — a dead tree can fail in a moderate wind that would not bother a healthy tree at all. If half or more of the canopy has died, the root system is also compromised. At that point, trimming the remaining live sections does not address the underlying structural failure. The tree needs to come down.
In North Alabama, the species most commonly found in this state are water oaks past their lifespan, large pines killed by southern pine beetle, and Bradford pears that have split but are still partially standing.
Trunk cavities and structural decay
A visible cavity in the trunk, especially at or near the base, indicates internal rot that the outside of the tree is not showing you. Research indicates that 30–40% internal decay is enough to cause failure in a wind event that a healthy tree would handle without issue. If you can see a cavity, you are only seeing the surface — the decay inside is typically larger than it appears.
You can sometimes detect a hollow area by tapping the trunk — a dull thud instead of a solid knock indicates a void inside. This is not a diagnostic substitute for a professional evaluation, but it is a starting point.
When to trim instead of remove
Not every problem tree needs full removal. Targeted trimming is the right call when: the tree is structurally sound but has dead limbs in the canopy, one major limb is problematic but the tree structure is intact, or the tree is too close to a structure but healthy enough to be managed with clearance pruning. The cost of waiting
A tree that needs removal but is left standing does not get better with time — it gets worse. Root decay expands, internal rot spreads, and the window for a controlled, planned removal gets smaller. When that tree eventually fails — in a storm, or on a calm day — the removal now has to happen under emergency conditions with a damaged structure underneath it. That emergency removal costs significantly more than the proactive one would have.
