Tree topping is one of the most damaging practices in the tree care industry — and one of the most commonly requested by homeowners who do not yet know what it does to a tree. If a company offers to "top" your tree to reduce its size, that is a red flag. Here is the difference between proper trimming and topping, and why it matters.
What tree topping actually does to your tree
- !Removes 50–100% of the leaf-bearing canopy, starving the tree of its food-producing capacity
- !Creates large open wounds that the tree cannot properly compartmentalize — leading to decay and disease
- !Triggers rapid regrowth of weakly attached water sprouts that are more likely to fail in wind than the original branches
- !Leaves the tree structurally compromised — a topped tree is more dangerous than an untrimmed one
- !Destroys the tree's natural form permanently — topped trees almost never recover their proper structure
What proper tree trimming actually looks like
Legitimate trimming — what arborists call pruning — removes specific branches at their point of origin or at a lateral branch that is large enough to sustain continued growth. Every cut is made just outside the branch collar, which is the raised ring of tissue where the branch meets the trunk or parent branch. This allows the tree to seal the wound through a natural callus formation process.
Proper pruning removes deadwood, crossing branches, structurally weak limbs, and branches that create clearance problems — without removing healthy scaffold branches or the central leader. After proper trimming, the tree retains its natural form and structure. It does not look like it was cut with a hedge clipper.
If the goal is reducing the tree's size
The legitimate alternative to topping for size reduction is crown reduction pruning — a technique where the canopy is reduced in volume by cutting back to lateral branches that are at least one-third the diameter of the branch being removed. Crown reduction takes more time and skill than topping, which is why some crews default to topping instead. Done correctly, it achieves meaningful size reduction without the structural damage that topping causes.
For trees that have simply outgrown their space — too tall for the yard, constantly conflicting with power lines, or structurally at odds with the surrounding property — removal and replacement with a more appropriate species is often the better long-term answer than repeated size reduction attempts.
How to spot a company that will top your trees
Any company that quotes you a job described as "topping," "hat-racking," or "rounding over" your tree is describing a practice condemned by every legitimate arborist organization. A reputable tree service will never recommend topping as a solution. If a crew proposes it — especially at a very low price — walk away and get a second opinion. The long-term cost of repairing or removing a topped tree far exceeds whatever was saved on the original job.
